Washtenaw County officially got its first E85 pump Saturday, joining only 16 other stations in the state in offering the 85 percent ethanol fuel.
With balloons, cameras and a cadre of elected officials, the Sunoco station on West Stadium Boulevard introduced the corn-based fuel to the community. Saturday's event, held under sunny skies and with a handful of curious onlookers, signified the broadening of alternative fuel choices in the Ann Arbor area market. Biodiesel and compressed natural gas are also available.
E85 can only be used in "flex-fuel'' vehicles. While it's not clear how many such vehicles there are locally, officials said there are more than 6 million such vehicles on the road nationwide, and they are growing more popular. E85 is offered at about 800 locations nationwide.
The fuel, which has been available at the station for about a month, has been priced at $2.99. Cars using it get about 10 to 15 percent less mileage per gallon than cars burning regular fuel, said Mitch Irwin, Michigan Department of Agriculture director.
