Poland experienced its hottest July since official records began 227 years ago, with average mid-afternoon temperatures hitting 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), the Meteorological Institute in Warsaw said Wednesday.

"The level of heat actually experienced by Poles was up to 50 degrees C, taking into account the air temperature, windspeed, humidity levels and sunshine," Michal Kowalewski, a weather expert at the institute, told AFP.

In Warsaw, the average temperature in July measured over 24 hours was 23.5 degrees C, or 5.5 degrees C higher than normal.

Temperatures peaked on July 21, with the mercury climbing to 33.9 degrees C in the capital and a sweltering 35.1 degrees C in the southern city of Krakow, according to the Meteorological Institute.
