UTC agrees to make fuel cells for Spanish military submarine
July 20, 2006

HARTFORD, Conn. --United Technologies Corp. has reached a deal with the Spanish navy to produce an ethanol-powered fuel cell for a new military submarine.

UTC Power, a South Windsor-based division of United Technologies, declined to disclose the financial terms of its deal with Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, the builder of Spain's new 2,500-ton S-80 submarine.

The cells would allow the diesel-electric submarines to stay underwater longer, company officials said.

It will take about five years to design and produce the system could result in about 80 jobs at UTC Power, said Henry DeRonck, the company's general manager for space and defense.

1. Grain alcohol on submarines. Sounds like the makings for some

3. This is an excellent reason to ban ethanol.
It has military applications.
