INDUSTRY has reacted with dismay to proposals by a number of Britain’s leading companies for the government to set tougher targets for carbon emissions. The Corporate Leaders’ Group on Climate Change, comprising 14 big British firms, last week lobbied Tony Blair to set tougher targets for greenhouse gas emissions as part of a set of proposals that also included road pricing, congestion charging and reductions in business rates on energy- efficient buildings.

Martin Temple, the EEF’s director-general, said: “Industry accepts its share of the responsibility for tackling climate change and stands four-square behind the need to invest in energy efficiency and new technologies to address the challenges we face as a society. “Indeed, to date, no other sector has done more to cut its emissions and it is a welcome development to see other sectors of the economy at last joining the debate and prepared to play their part.
“However, the UK cannot go off and plough its own furrow with tougher targets than the rest of Europe, let alone other parts of the world.
“The UK cannot win this battle alone, and success in tackling climate change depends on everyone moving forward together with the same aims. Should we press ahead unilaterally, we may well become the greenest place on earth but without the wealth to enjoy it.”
