I can barely bring myself to browse this forum
and it's not for the reasons that I deliberately avoid some of the others at DU..

It is just so DAMNED heartbreaking to read the subject lines.. I actually fear what might be inside the link.. It's an irrational thing, but most of the things that are reported about the environment/energy/science areas are NOT good..

I do what I can, but these sorrowful articles make me think that somewhere "out there" a horrible thing is going on, and there is nothing anyone can do except tell other people.

I have almost decided to take the "Ignorance is bliss" approach.

When I think back to when I learned about the exotic animals of faraway places, or of the natural wonders or the world, it never occurred to me that in my lifetime, we might see the last orangutan, or the last rhinoceros, or the last unpolluted river/stream/lake.

I swam in unpolluted water, drank directly from mountain streams, walked barefoot in mossy mountain meadows. I have held golden tree frogs in my hands, and have seen flocks of wild toucans & parrots, so many in a flock that it created a shadow, much like clouds do.. To think that greedy humans are willing to live without these things, is excrutiatingly painful.. I almost do not want to know about it.. :(

2. Aye!
I don't even know how to respond to it. I remember those pleasures, and I fear they're just a memory now.

3. I am trying hard as hell to help in this cause with thoughts and ideas
to stop the madness too.

We Humans have no choice but to awaken.

The Progressive Movement have to to show evidence of linking up in a meaningful way to the Futurist Movement. Also missing are the Green and Peace Guys. Last is the Philisophical people. These groups must take charge of the Planet. Its been too long in the Hands of Corp Greed.

Earth(Homo Sapiens) musr either prepare for a long goodbye(slow death) or a very long and fruitful existence. The latter can only be achiueved by Maturity. When considering Earth,....... don't ask.

5. Yar right on. But I try not to read some of the stuff.
To painful. I will say this. When I grew up Maine was pretty dirty and a Dem gov. cleaned it up. It is pretty good now and even the salmon are back. Things can get better. That law was the basic laws for all the 'green' stuff.

7. Fighting the good fight
Your saddness pains me. I grew up in central Lake county Illinois when the three towns that make up that region had a combined population of about 35,000. Now, they are greater than 100,000. I now live in eastern Loudoun county VA. When we moved to the county in 1998 it had a population of about 150,000, now it is about a quarter million people or so. I see the new mall and shops etc., and it makes me sad that kids have no where to run, bike etc. the way I did.

I have chosen to act on my sadness. I chose environmental and occupational health for a career. Every day both professionally and in my spare time I try to do what is right either for the environment or for the workers (I hate that word, prefer employees) of the country.

I urge you to try to take action every day as well. It need not be a grand gesture like tree sitting, but do something every day for the betterment of the environment, and get connected with others who think the same way we do, including through this message board and other organizations. We can win this fight the same way diamonds are made, through solid sustained, unyielding pressure.

Feel free to contact me off line for additional ideas and getting connected.
Peace,
Matt

8. how about this?
humans were put here to eliminate
hydrocarbons, which if left unchecked
would become along w/ old growth forests,
a fatal threat to the planet.

Humans have successfully thwarted this
catastrophic event.

Mission accomplished, humans can now
go the way of the dinosaur.

Thanx abunch,
Gaia

9. I hear ya.
Ignorance IS bliss. Sometimes I wish I could become an ostrich just like SO many other Americans, it sure would make life easier.
