Preparation for "Syriana" - Kunstler's "End of Suburbia"
I am taking the family to see "Syriana" this weekend. Wife is NOT a techie - but very politically aware. Kids are techies.

Would showing Kunstler's DVD "The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream" the day before be worthwhile?

3. Long Emergency....
That's the one I meant. :)

I have just had to move out of Portland and into the suburbs. I HATE IT!!!!
No freaking sidewalks, or having to go 2 blocks up, one block over and 3 blocks back to get the the freaking road 1 block behind my house. (where there is ONE bus I can catch to get anywhere, and it comes once each HOUR!)

I hate the burbs!

4. After 40+ Urban Years Followed by 15+ Exurban Years
It is great to get back into an urban community -- planned community/transit village; light rail within walking distance (every 12 minutes), train to San Francisco at the end of the light rail (every half hour during the day, every 10-12 during rush hour); Starbucks and a VietNamese restaurant and a nice California "eclectic" restaurant and a barber shop, and a dry cleaner all within walking distance.
