CBC News

Unseasonable temperatures are hampering cross country and downhill skiing at Whitehorse's ski facilities.

An early snowfall in October had raised hopes for a long season, but that melted down to ice patches during a November warm spell. Since then, the weather's turned cold, but there has been little precipitation.

Last updated Dec 2 2005 06:03 PM CST

CBC News

A group of Canadian scientists have issued a warning to Prime Minister Paul Martin, calling on the federal government to act on climate change.

Gordon McBain, chair of the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences, and 49 other scientists sent a letter to the prime minister this week.

In it they say Canada is warming faster than most other countries and will be one of the most impacted countries.

The scientists say Canadians could see drought on the prairie, the spread of insect pests in forests, migration of Pacific salmon northward; and increased severity and frequency of extreme weather events like floods, storms, tornadoes and droughts.

They note Canadians are already seeing some impacts from climate change, and say urgent action is needed by Canada to address the problem.
