RENO, Nev. (AP) - A military watchdog group is questioning a federal contractor's plans to transport up to 40 million pounds of obsolete bombs across northern Nevada, including Reno.

General Dynamics was awarded a $247 million contract in August by the Army, in part, to transport the ordnance from the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, Calif., to McAlester, Okla., where the bombs will be dismantled.

Grace Potorti of the Rural Alliance for Military Accountability questioned why the Army rejected a lower bid by a company that wanted to dismantle the 750-pound bombs at the Herlong depot, about 50 miles north of Reno.

"It seems crazy," Potorti told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "Why risk the transportation through heavily populated areas when someone else would have done the job much cheaper, safer and on-site?"
