Airport terminal powered by sun (Australia)
By GREG KELTON
10oct05

FIVE hundred solar panels will be installed at Adelaide's new airport terminal, saving it up to $50,000 a year in power bills.

The State Government and Adelaide airport management believe the $1 million move will make the airport the first in Australia, and possibly the world, to be mostly solar-powered.

Premier Mike Rann announced the move - "a birthday gift" - at the airport yesterday before about 50,000 visitors to the new terminal.

"Because the new (terminal) so much symbolises the renewed confidence and energy of South Australia, I wanted it to also demonstrate our state's commitment to renewable energy," he said. <snip>

2. Labor politician says Airlines bankrupt soon.
Yes, but what good is a solar powered airport if there is no airline running?

Labor Member Andrew McNamara says that nothing can keep the airlines up after the end of cheap oil... ETA 2008, 2009. Just face it, the airlines are stuffed. Putting a solar panel on an airport is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Sell ALL shares and investments in airlines, or you are going to lose your money! (You'll probably lose your money when the US Dollar tanks, but that's inevitable.)

Andrew McNamara the Labor Member for Hervey bay, Queensland.

He speaks to David Room of the Postcarbon Institute about the seriousness of peak oil for the modern economy, and how we are going to have to learn to define success through other endeavours than material success! (To the corporate world, this is tantamount to treason. A politician advising that people get used to not consuming so many products!)

About 45 minutes audio.

Australia’s celebrity scientist "Dr Karl" says peak oil is here, on our very cool national youth radio station, JJJ

This podcast radio interview is a great introduction to peak oil from a very cool station.

Steve Cannane interviews James Howard Kunstler, author of "The Long Emergency: Surviving the End of the Oil Age, Climate Change, and Other Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-first Century".

Also present were Sonia Shah, Dr Karl, and Andrew McNamara — a Queensland Labor party member concerned about peak oil.
