Iran threatens to hit Turkey if US, Israel attack
Source: AP

Iran will target NATO's missile defense installations in Turkey if the U.S. or Israel attacks the Islamic Republic, a senior commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard said Saturday.

Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the head of the Guards' aerospace division, said the warning is part of a new defense strategy to counter what he described as an increase in threats from the U.S. and Israel.

Tensions have been rising between Iran and the West since the release of a report earlier this month by the International Atomic Energy Agency that said for the first time that Tehran was suspected of conducting secret experiments whose sole purpose was the development of nuclear arms.

The U.S. and its Western allies suspect Iran of trying to produce atomic weapons, and Israel, which views Tehran as an existential threat, has warned of a possible strike on Iran's nuclear program. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Threatening the Turks now. Not a particularly wise thing to do.

And it's not a mistranslation, it's also reported in presstv.ir, the official news organization of the Iran government:

Commander of the Aerospace Division of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps says in case of a military movement against Iran, NATO's missile shield in Turkey will be Iran's first target.

“The West's missile shield which is being deployed in Turkey by NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), is managed by America and the Zionists, but to deceive Turkish people, they call it NATO defense shield,” Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh said.

1. IF Iran is attacked. IF.
Since Iran is not going to be attacked, no problem.

4. But I've been told that Iran would NEVER attack another country.
Anti-science pro-nukes have said that Iran should have nuclear weapons because they've never attacked another country.
Yet here they are threatening a country which has not threatened them.

5. What makes you so sure Iran won't be attacked?
It's in violation of it's IAEA agreements,
it's enrichment facilities are on military bases and are de-facto military weapons sites,
even the US with 104 reactors can't justify a new enrichment facility.
Obama has long been committed to preventing nuclear proliferation,
if Iran continues on this course, other countries will follow.
Obama gave a bunch of bunker-busters to the UAE,
what will Iran do if the UAE bombs Iran's military nuclear weapons facilities?

2. Turkey Has Largely Been On Iran's Side In This Made Up Conflict
Therefore, I seriously doubt Iran is going to invade what has been an ally up to now. The bottom line is that all this conflict can be averted if Israel and its political puppets in the USA would just leave Iran alone.

3. No, no, no. The media got the translation all wrong!
At least that is the spin from the Pro-Chavez and Pro-Ajmadinijad* apologists.

* I don't have time to spell his name correctly.

8. Nope, Turkey isn't threatening to attack Iran.
And because Turkey is a member of NATO, NATO will be required to respond.

11. The US and Turkey are members of NATO
hence the threat of retaliation.

It's very clear who is beating the war drums for the first attack.

13. Counter-Attack
... and only on the NATO shield, not on civilian targets like Israel and USA do.

Note also that the majority in Turkey (like most people throughout the world) sympathize with Iran against the hate and terrorism imposed by Israel and its stooges in Washington, DC. Turkey wants to be a part of NATO but it better not risk losing its own citizenry just because it wants to curry favor with European/North American powers.

9. The people of Iran are delightful. The government of Iran is Batshit Crazy.
Most of the people of Iran concur with the latter assessment. When people long for the days of the Shah, you know there's trouble in Paradise.

10. I agree.
But the going by the two fellows I trained with for a couple of months before the revolution, they thought the same thing about the Shah when he was in power. From the frying pan into the fire, so to speak.

12. Yes, and it's win-win for the government to escalate things.
If they get bombed, citizens will rally around the government, and the government gets more power and popular support.
If they don't get bombed, they get nuclear weapons capabilities faster.
There's no reason for the government not to escalate the situation.
So, it will continue to escalate until something happens.

14. Threats Against Iran
Why is it that so many Iran haters on this forum refuse to go into an outrage over the fact that Israel and the USA have made repeated threats to Iran for the past 10 years?
