With DoE, DoD Backing SolarStrong to 2x US Home Solar Power

SolarCity's SolarStrong project, which the company says could double the number of US residential solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, moved a step closer to becoming reality yesterday when Energy Secretary Stephen Chu approved a conditional commitment to partially guarantee a $344 million loan.

Part of the SolarStrong project entails SolarCity working with leading US military housing privatization developers to install, own and operate as many as 160,000 rooftop solar power installations on as many as 124 military housing developments across 33 states, according to a SolarCity news release.

The project is expected to result in over $1 billion worth of solar projects and 371 megawatts (MW) of residential solar power capacity being installed. USRG Renewable Finance, a subsidiary of the US Renewables Group, and BoA Merrill Lynch will serve as lead lender partners for the project.

"We're extremely grateful to the Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office, in addition to our partners, U.S. Renewables Group and BofA Merrill Lynch. Without this group, we would not have been able to make the economics of this project work," said Lyndon Rive, SolarCity's CEO. "Now the solar industry has a debt model that can make distributed generation affordable on a massive scale."

Army to Establish Energy Initiatives Office Task Force for Large-Scale Renewable Energy Projects

John M. McHugh, secretary of the army, announced today the establishment of the Energy Initiatives Office (EIO) Task Force at the GovEnergy Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. The EIO Task Force is part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, and will serve as the central managing office for the development of large-scale Army renewable energy projects. The EIO Task Force will be fully operational by Sept. 15, 2011.

The new EIO Task Force is integral to the Army addressing rising energy security challenges, escalating fuel prices, and stricter federal mandates.

The Energy Initiatives Office Task Force will help the Army build resilience through renewable energy while streamlining our business practices so developers can invest in and build an economically viable, large-scale renewable energy infrastructure, said McHugh, To meet a goal of 25 percent renewable energy by 2025, the Army must use every opportunity to be energy efficient and draw power from alternative and/or renewable energy sources.

The scale of renewable energy production the Army needs in order to provide enhanced energy security is estimated to require investment up to $7.1billion over the next 10 years. This level of investment is expected to generate 2.1 million megawatt hours of power annually for the Army....

He is doing this in all areas that he has administrative control over. Wonder if the schools rebuilding program will be putting solar on most of those 30,000 schools?
