Toyota's New Camry Hybrid Leads the Pack in Price, MPG
Toyota Motor Company (TYO:7203) is moving aggressively to stay on top of the hybrid market even as fellow veterans like Ford Motor Company (F) and plucky new players like Hyundai Motor Company (SEO:005380) look to give chase.
...
The new entry level LE hybrid drastically improves fuel economy, bumping it from 31/35 mpg city/highway to 43/39 mpg -- an increase of approximately 30 percent in city gas mileage. The XLE hybrid offers a respectable 41/38 mpg. Horsepower has jumped to 200hp from 187hp combined horsepower in the previous generation.

Much of improved gas mileage comes thanks to weight reductions. Toyota has shaved over 200 lb off the weight of the vehicle. The 2011 hybrid weighed 3,680 lb. The new SE hybrid weighs 3,417 lb, while the XLE weighs 3,441 lb.
...
The LE hybrid shaves $1,150 off the MSRP of the previous model, placing the cost of ownership at a modest $25,900. An XLE costs $27,400 -- just slightly more than the previous Camry Hybrid -- but contains many luxury perks that the former model didn't, most significantly the Entune infotainment system (more on this in a separate, upcoming piece).

8. The Roadster was always meant to be a stepping stone.
From the very beginning, the Roadster was meant to dramatically break the stereo-typed image of electric cars being re-skinned golf carts. As it did so, it was to generate interest, develop, road test and solidify technology, and prepare for large scale production of a next step car, one more usable by more people.

The Model S is that next step.

2. I'm much more partial to the Infiniti hybrid plan; a beast that just happens to get great mileage :D
Of course, besides the hybrid model, Infiniti is just not getting it. I've read they're teaming up with Mercedes on engines, but I have yet to see it. Nissan, in general, needs a serious influx of smaller and much more efficient engines. Evidently they've never heard of diesels, turbocharging and supercharging, and direct injection is only in a few of their cars.

The Camry interior is MUCH improved - have hated Toyota/Lexus interiors for awhile. Kudos on more power and much more efficiency. It still looks pretty yawny on the outside though.

Just what is it about Toyota, Honda and Nissan these days, with such hideous design? Acura and Lexus are becoming even more attrocious. Despite the less than stellar reliability, the European brands are so much more visually and viscerally appealing. I'm really liking current Volks/Audi, Mercedes and even BMW design, and the diesels coming out of Germany get ridiculously high mileage. I'd much rather go that route.

3. Agree re VW-
My 3 year old Jetta TDI averaged 52 mpg today-2/3 highway, 1/3 city. Great car! We also have a Prius so the mileage competition can get fierce around here, lol.
