Global PV installations to grow 16%; revenues to remain flat

Monday, August 15, 2011

A shift in demand from key European markets to North America and Asia could bring the amount of photovoltaic solar power installed globally up16 percent within four years, but falling product prices mean little growth in revenues, according to a study from Lux Research.

Analyst Matt Feinstein from Lux said grid-connected PV systems will grow from 15.8 gigawatts in 2010 to 37.5 GW in 2016, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.5 percent.

He said this increase will no longer primarily come from Germany, currently the world’s top solar business destination, but from fast-improving markets in Asia and the United States.

Based on revenues, however, Mr. Feinstein said the industry will actually “shrink” from $64.4 billion in 2010 to $56.9 billion in 2012, affected by lower average selling prices of solar products like solar modules and solar cells.
