Stop building the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant: Lu By Lee I-chia / Staff Reporter
Construction at the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant should be abandoned as soon as possible, former vice president Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) said yesterday as part of her nationwide “Save Earth Protect Taiwan” campaign.
Lu, who visited earthquake and tsunami-hit areas in northeastern Japan late last month, shared her thoughts on the risks of nuclear energy with a gathering of women’s organizations and civic groups at Taipei’s Chih Nan Temple and emphasized the threat of nuclear power plants to residents of the Greater Taipei area.
Lu said she had met several Japanese who told her they felt -deceived by the government after the disaster and Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant crisis, but they did not know how to express their disappointment.
For their part, Lu said, Taiwanese strove for freedom and democracy, they protested against the government and some even became prisoners of conscience, which is why the public knows it rules the country and demonstrates its will through voting.
