Solar power stations set for NSW, Qld

Updated June 18, 2011 20:38:00

The Federal Government has announced three quarters of a billion dollars in funding for two major solar power stations that will go ahead in regional New South Wales and Queensland.

The new solar power stations were among seven shortlisted under the Government's Solar Flagships Scheme.

They will be built in Moree in New South Wales and Chinchilla in Queensland.

Federal Energy Minister Martin Ferguson says the two plants will have the capacity to power more than 115,000 Australian homes at any one time.

He says the technology developed there will be able to be sold around the world.

World's largest solar plants for NSW, Qld

Two of the largest solar power stations in the world will be built in NSW and Queensland, the federal government says.

More than three quarters of a billion dollars in federal funding will go towards the building of the stations, which will be at Moree in northwest NSW and Chinchilla in Queensland.

Making the announcement in Sydney on Saturday, federal Energy Minister Martin Ferguson said the projects were expected to generate enough power to support the electricity needs of more than 115,000 Australian homes every year.

NSW Environment Minister Robyn Parker welcomed the announcement, which she says will put NSW on the map as a global leader in solar technology.

Areva and BP win $819m in Australia Solar Flagships funding

Australia will be home to two of the largest solar power plants in the world after its government committed A$770m ($819m) to fund one thermal and one PV facility under its Solar Flagships programme.

Areva and BP Solar emerged as the winners of the first round of Solar Flagships funding, which was announced earlier today by Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Brisbane.

Solar Dawn, a consortium led by Areva Solar, plans to build a 250MW solar thermal/gas hybrid plant near Chinchilla, Queensland, after securing A$464m towards the A$1.2bn project.

Sited near the recently-built 750MW Kogan Creek coal-fired power plant, it will use the Compact Linear Fresnel (CLF) technology developed by Australian solar pioneer David Mills, whose company Ausra was bought by http://www.areva.com/EN/home-57/index.html">Areva early last year.

Solar Dawn also includes CS Energy – which is owned by the Queensland state and runs Kogan Creek – and independent renewable energy developer Wind Prospect CWP

1. PNM has been quietly building solar and wind farms here in NM
for almost 20 years. It's quite comforting to know that my cheapskate use of power is being partially obtained from renewable sources, that it's not all the dirty, stinking, unhealthy coal from the Four Corners plants.

2. Wonderful post today about solar projects. Glad they are happening.
However, I think we also need smaller projects. Say ones that work for a small community or neighborhood for our rural areas. I have one sil collecting the parts he will need for a wind project & another hoping to save money for one. They live about 2 miles apart and I am sure there would be neighbors also interested in cooperative energy projects. I have been trying to get them to work together on one project.

AstraZeneca installs 7,300 solar panels made by Glasgow company

Published: Saturday, June 18, 2011 4:13 PM CDT

AstraZeneca announced the installation of a 7,300-panel solar energy project capable of producing energy equivalent to about 10 percent of the north Wilmington, Del. campus’ office building electricity use. The cells were supplied by Motech, which has a plant in Glasgow, Del.

The 1.7 megawatt system, the largest non-utility solar project in Delaware, will produce green electricity that is the equivalent of removing the greenhouse gas emissions of more than 300 cars from the road per year.

“Producing green electricity is a significant step toward reducing the impact we have on the environment globally," said Rich Fante, president, AstraZeneca U.S. & CEO, North America. "AstraZeneca is committed to doing its part to create a cleaner, more energy-efficient Delaware."

The project is expected to produce 2.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which is enough to power about 100 homes. It also will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,200 metric tons per year.
