World energy consumption and CO2 production through 2010
Edited on Thu Jun-09-11 09:21 AM by GliderGuider
BP has just published the 2011 version of their Statistical Review of World Energy, with data through 2010. I thought it might be interesting to take a look at some graphs of the world's primary energy consumption and CO2 production since 1965, taken from their latest data.

First, a look at the total Primary Energy consumption, with the fuels stacked.
Notice the return to BAU in 2010 as the world economy "recovered".

Here the consumption of each type of fuel is broken out for easier comparison.
Notice the increasing use of coal since 2003.

Here are the contributions of each fuel to the changing primary energy mix over time.
Again, notice what's happening to coal.

Here are the global CO2 emissions from fuel burning.
The return to BAU in 2010 is apparent.

Finally, here is how much CO2 has been generated per unit of energy consumption.
The effect of increasing coal consumption starting in 2003 is clearly visible.
New energy demands are being met by coal rather than low-carbon sources.
