Billions needed to boost food production, says DuPont committee

Reuters) - High-tech seeds and innovations in chemicals and farming will not be enough to solve looming food shortages for the world, according to a report issued Tuesday by a committee formed by food and chemicals conglomerate DuPont.

"People are starting to recognize that food demand is outstripping supply," said DuPont executive vice president Jim Borel, who oversees DuPont's agriculture and nutrition business. "If the world doesn't figure out how to effectively deal with this challenge, then the results are ugly," he said. "It is becoming clear... that society has to figure out ways to work together differently than we ever have."

The report stated that lagging public policy support for increased food production, outdated and ineffective infrastructure, and a lack of cohesive efforts by public and private players were among the many hurdles to increasing food production. And the report cited subsidies and trade distortions as problems that have distorted the international food and agricultural system.

Anyone for a quick round of "Limits to Growth"? How about you, Mr. Malthus? Feeling up to the challenge?

I get it that DuPont is trolling for regulatory favours for their biotech, but the committee is talking about much wider global needs than just Frankenseeds.

1. Franks seed and biotech will never save us. Sustainable agriculture is the only way to go.
Monsanto and it's like wish to destroy diversity so the can make MORE money.

2. How about "fewer people"?

Of course if the food supply falls behind, that outcome is inevitable anyway...

3. Birth control . . .
. . . is just so much easier than starvation.

5. While it is...
the general population is to stupid to realize that.

Starvation in this country will be very interesting. Considering that people already over indulge, a normal meal size will make them feel underfed.

I can't wait for the food riots when they can't get their 2nd helping of crap. LOL

4. With Obama, they'll get them (probably with a nice bonus too) ...
> DuPont is trolling for regulatory favours for their biotech

In fact, Monsanto have already got them from "Mr Bipartisan" so it's
not as if DuPont have got any kind of uphill struggle here ...

6. magnetize seeds to boost food production
No gmos needed.
Nothing wrong with ideas about population control. But there is plenty of food out there even in these climate-challenged times.
For evidence on magnetizing seeds, see these studies
