8. Lots.
Edited on Sat Mar-12-11 08:18 PM by FBaggins
Lots and lots. An xray is usually a small fraction of a rad.

750 Rad over a relatively short period would mean a 50/50 chance of survival if you received immediate medical care... around a 90% chance of imminent death if you didn't.

The problem is that "rads" is a unit of radiation dose, not a measure of radioactivity. You can't produce a map like this. A given amount of fallout would have dramatically different doses depending on dozens of factors.

They're numbers are entirely invented... and bogus.

5. That is not correct.
I experienced the volcano ash from the Washington State Mt Helena explosion way over in Lisle Illinois. Within some ten hours of the event.

So I think it would be safe to say four days or LESS. Not ten days though.

I forget what time the volcano went up back in May of 1981, but by 4 or 5 Pm that same day, I was on a raft in a lake in Lisle Illinois. And ash was on my arms and legs.

At first I thought the guys I was talking to, who were in their fishing boat, had been leaning over me with their cigarettes, and I told them to quit getting the ash on me. They laughed good naturedly and put their cigs out.

But after they left, the ash continued to come down, and I realized it was from the volcano so many thousands of miles away.

Also I found this discussion very good also:

http://modernsurvivalblog.com/nuclear/west-coast-usa-danger-if-japan-nuclear-reactor-meltdown/

on edit: and then, "rumormillnews" discusses their reaction to the above.

Also both of those discussions are concerned with an all out Meltdown, which doesn't seem to be what has happened so far.

6. That would be "ten days" AFTER a significant realease, right?
Shouldn't we wait until something like that actually happens?

12. Indeed... I mean this blows even "worse than Chernobyl" out of the water.
Did Chernobyl kill every living thing for thousands of miles?

IIRC, they continued to opperate the neighboring reactors for several years. They must have used robots.

11. No way!
One of the knowledgeable smart people said my concern for spreading radioactivity was an example of stupid.
After my re-education I realize something like this cannot even happen. :silly:

13. A meltdown CAN happen.... THIS can't.
The exposure levels that this graphic claims are just way too high. This isn't Chernobyl... it's every reactor in Japan "going Chernobyl". It's hundreds of millions of people dying.

IOW... it's a crock of smelly stuff.

15. Also, the fallout map is now gone
From what I've read, it sounds like it was actually an old map of the predicted fallout pattern after a multiple-warhead attack on Japan.

750 "rads", for example, is about 1000 times as much radiation as was actually measured just outside the control building (it was 700 mSv, or 0.7 rads in old-school units).

17. If that's what the map was...
...someone dishonestly wrote "Nuclear meltdown Fukushima plant" on it.

And those levels are still too high for even a multiple warhead attack on Japan.

If that were true, we would have never heard of "nuclear winter" because the results of droping hundreds of bombs would just be "everyone in the northern hemisphere dies".

I forget which posted it first.

You fell for a hoax. A painfully obvious hoax. Good job. I hope you feel good trying to terrify people with it.

19. It would take probably about 36 hours to go from Japan to Northern California.
first of all, you should not that the the prevailing air currents go from Japan across the Pacific, so in terms of soemthing in the atmosphere in Japan at noon today, that material will not circle the globe befor ehitting california, it will simply need to go across the Pacific ocean.

And then depending on how their flow is moving, they might swing up through Alaska and then back down to say, the Seattle region, or they could go straight across (not a usual phenomena though) or they could go southward and hit Southern California and then come up a bit before preceding across the USA.

However the atmospheric currents can stall out, and can swirl around, so it could take as much as ten days. But not necessarily.
