German opposition launches court challenge to extension of nuclear power

BERLIN — A group of opposition-led state governments is asking Germany's highest court to strike down a government plan extending the life of the country's nuclear power plants.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right government last October pushed through the plan to keep Germany's 17 nuclear plants open an average 12 extra years.

The centre-left parties now in opposition decided a decade ago to shut down all the plants by 2021. They are defending that timetable fiercely.

Merkel bypassed parliament's upper house — which represents Germany's 16 states and where her government lacks a majority — to make the change....
