Heat Wave: SHHHHHH - never mention Global Warming on tv news
are you noticing how all the heat wave stories on tv news and weather segments

FAIL to ever mention Global Warming?

It is amazing.

weather segments keep observing "we hit a new record today". Yet i have never heard a local weatherguy speak the words

global warming.

same for today's national tv news reporting on the heat wave.

google "orbiting sunshade" for the solution better than slow or never Kyoto. Kyoto is nice but seems it will not work well. try it, sure, but get the job done with orbiting sunshade.

1. Not denying Global Warming but...
It's July and the middle of summer. It always gets hot in July in a large majority of the country. Maybe that's why we have a heat wave. It sure has been hot and dry around here. We'll see what the winter brings.

2. 12 people dead in Phoenix from the heat (mostly transients) this month
our average is 6-8 for the whole year

Even in our searing desert heat, we are 10-12 degrees above average

3. oddly "global warming" is the knee-jerk response to weather reports
The media never says it, but the people do.

The key is not hot weather, or any particular kind of weather. Rather, the signs of global climate change are in overall patterns of extreme weather.

Climate volatility is one of the predicted effects of global warming and so far we're right on track for more frequent record-breaking heat/drought/floods/rain from the American Northwest to China and Australia and the Arctic.

So a lot of dim bulbs may wipe their brow and vaguely wonder about global warming when the temperature rises above 100 degrees, but those of us who have been following the science for years can see the telltale signs year round in the changing distribution of plants and animals and insects, of spreading disease, of disappearing species, of thinning ice and melting glaciers, the acidification of ocean water. The list goes on and on.

7. it's true that the popular reaction is misguided
But it's still the case that people have global warming on their mind and talk about it even though the media are silent on it.

10. The media have been muzzled
You can see some of the climatoligists (the true scientists, not the news personalities) biting their lip to keep from bringing up the subject. It's especially evident when discussing the record-breaking hurricanes of July 2005.

But government funding means government control, and the Bushies are putting a lid on any mention of global warming.

Should be real interesting to see what we're NOT saying long about August and September, at the height of the hurricane season.

Crying GW when the temperature is high is a s meaningfull as the detractors claiming it doesn't exist on a cold day. These are two different, although related items.

11. It's a classic Bayesian problem.
It's not hard to assign probability of particular events (a hurricane, a drought, a heat-wave, etc) given a conditional distribution, like "condition on the presence of global warming".

The inverse is trickier: given a particular event, like a drought, what is the probability that it was caused by global warming? The classic Bayesian problem.

Of course, here in the real world, we hardly ever get to solve the easy direction. All we have are events, and we must attempt to solve the "inverse" direction to assess probabilities of the underlying conditions.

13. Ah, but there are so many events that it is almost a priori.
Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 08:37 AM by NNadir
We cannot definitively attribute your situation in Arizona to global climate change, but what is happening where you are does not exist in isolation, and anyone can see that...a South Atlantic hurricane...record numbers of hurricanes in July 2005...July snows in the UK...melting glaciers...unprecendented droughts...deadly heat waves everywhere...

As I recall the World Meteorological Society was already issuing unprecedented warnings some years ago, and every year brings new consequences.

I am personally increasingly terrified. Even I, who am so fond of calculations, need no mathematics to tell me what is happening.

16. The sky is falling
There have been more global warning scare stories in the media in recent years than you can shake a stick at....and most relied upon "scientists" that were more political hacks than actual scientists. As for the current heat wave, it's almost comical that folks can blithely blame it on anthropegenic global warming (yeah, humans)....while the records that fall from 50 or 100 years ago, we're merely natural occurrences. I saw that a record fell in Denver yesterday...oh geez, must be global warming. When it hit 104 in 1895, it was just Mother Nature, but now it's our our fault. What a bunch of nonsense....sheer nonsense.
P.S. There have been no demonstrable increases in hurricane intensity or frequency in recent years... 4 years ago, Dr. William Gray of Colorado State indicated we were due to enter a cycle of high hurricane activity...his opinion on Global Warming is that it's total BS.
P.P.S. Speaking of hurricanes, Chris Landsea of NOAA resigned from the IPCC due to their non-scientific slant...a couple of the IPCC hacks were speaking about hurricanes and global warming in an attempt to paint a particular picture....Landsea was the actual IPCC hurricane expert and indicated there were no correlations to be found...he was understandably miffed.

You're conflating two separate issues in your (first forum) post.

Global warming is a fact. Anyone who doesn't believe that is beyond reach and will soon need serious medication to maintain their delusional view of the world.

The cause of this warming is still open to debate, although much of that debate is clouded by the disinformation of vested interests of the oil industry and other commericial enterprises.

Hey Boomer...ever look at the data? Would you even know what you're looking at? The surface data shows an upward trend, while the satellite data (and radiosonde balloon) data show a much less pronounced upward movement....in geologic terms (hundreds of thousands of years rather than 100), this is really quite a silly exercise. The bottom line is that the proclamations of "hottest in a gazillion years" is total nonsense...it makes terrific headlines, but that's about it....and the models have been consistently....wrong. They can't duplicate the actual observations/data.
P.S. Guess I'll look for some funding from the oil industry...thanks for the tip.

23. You believed the right-wingers, did you?
Chris Landsea, interestingly enough, is what you might consider "pro-Global-Warming".

The dustup at IPCC was seized upon by the American political right as an example of an eeevil PC socialist UN witch hunt -- and it wasn't. A lot of the politics was over the academic in-fighting of a couple of the investigators, including one from the USA, IIRC.

In addition, if you read Landsea and Gray closely, they do not completely discount global warming effects on hurricanes, and leave the door open for further research. What they do say is that there is no solid evidence and that it's scientifically untenable to claim that there is.

Other scientists disagree, which is usually what happens in scientific controversies. No matter how you, or the right-wing press, may deride scientific work that doesn't suit your fancy, in the long run it's usually the scientific method that produces the correct answers.

The sky may not be falling, but your credibility is.

27. Our troll was spouting....
...in no particular order

a) that there is no RW media and anyone that believes so is stupid.

b) that Dr. Grey was denied funding for his research by the Clinton administration for politcal reasons.

c) that all climate scientists that advocate the consensus position are driving Porsches because they are paid to take that position(really, he said that).

d) other equally goofy crap.

28. Best of luck
Dear one and all,

After I closely examined your forum rules (all 47 pages of them), I realized they could be summarized into one sentence: "No dissenting views allowed."

I've been barred from participating on this forum (and my posts deleted) since many of my views differ from the other participants. Congratulations on stifling any debate whatsoever....you can all just nod in unanimity on every topic heretofore, regardless how inane or obtuse your position might be....how peaceful, sweet, reaffirming and reassuring. Life must be great without any controversy. Best of luck to each of you....I enjoyed engaging some of you on various topics, but that is apparently forbidden in Dem Underground land. I'm confident that you all are extremely well-intended individuals with a different perspective than my own....personally, I think it's the differing views that make life interesting...not so for those who run this forum. Take care and farewell.....Stormy1

P.S. Below is the email I forwarded to the administrators....doubt they read through the whole thing since it challenges their orthodoxy, which can be a very scary thing for these folks.
P.P.S. Hey Viking12....thanks for mangling everything I said...no hard feelings though, you're okay in my book.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Administrators,

Thank you very much for letting me participate in the Democratic Underground forum...I found it very enlightening. A few thoughts for you to consider, since you've revoked my participation rights on the forum:

I don't often participate in online forums, but generally do so in an effort to gain perspective and perhaps share a different slant on issues....oftentimes, both sides gain from the exchanges. Heated? Sometimes, but they are usually good-natured and as long as both sides understand that the other is well-intended, there are no personal attacks. As I looked at your forum rules, it's quite clear that you've established a totalitarian forum, which will do little or nothing to further your cause. You've basically built a self affirming forum where everyone can go and say the same things over and over...not exactly how one learns anything, other than reinforcing one's own dogma. Quite sad, especially in light of the fact that liberals are the ones that are supposed to be open to different ideas, perspectives and diversity...apparently I was wrong. Very, very wrong. Not only do you not want to hear differing perspectives (which could lead to better understanding of the world around you), you don't want anyone even speaking those differing ideas/perspectives. The fact that you are incapable of listening to a moderate Independent voter speaks volumes...you just painted yourselves as a bigoted group that has stereotyped an entire voting block as right wing, uneducated loons. Here was an opportunity for you to get the perspectives of a middle-aged, educated, professional, who believes in many of the same things you do, but still has the audacity to vote "R" much of the time...and "D" some of the time....depends on the candidate. Yep...I'm pro choice, pro some gun control, not a brain-dead redneck, I'm an independent thinker, and I'm not a bible thumper.....yet I voted for Bush/Cheney. The nerve of some people. You don't want to hear it, but there a boatload of us out there. Too bad you don't want to understand us as we are a swing group that can fool the pollsters...you never will win another election with your current attitude. All the best in your future endeavors (I shouldn't have to say this, but that was a sincere comment)...hopefully open-mindedness will return to the traditional liberal mindset someday. It's obviously on hiatus for now. Thanks again, it was fun....Steve
