New Campaign Promises Death To Lionfish; 'They're Easy To Catch And Great To Eat'
http://www.underwatertimes.com/news.php?article_id=91354760821

Though comedic in nature, the new Lionfish PSA addresses a serious and growing problem. "These non-native fish are undergoing a population explosion, they are voracious predators, reproduce quickly, and threaten commercially important species, such as snapper and groupers. They have the potential to eat their way through and dramatically alter the ecosystem," said Dr. Steven Miller, Executive Producer of the PSA and a Research Professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The Lionfish PSA presents a humorous vision of the future – a Caribbean restaurant in which the only fish left to serve are lionfish. The actors are from the world famous Groundlings Improv Comedy Theater. Their performance is capped off by veteran Disney animator Tom Sito who created an iconic lionfish cartoon for the project.

The site also includes a link to youtube demonstrating how to safely fillet a lionfish- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fx3tf71TdfE

Unfortunately, with no natural predators, we're going to have to step up.

1. The video is OK, but it would be a lot easier to filet the
fish if you used a chef's knife to cut the spines off near the fish's back before beginning to filet the fish. It would take only a second, and then you could do an even better job. I can tell that the man in the video hasn't done this much, or he'd have figured that out.

You can tell they're either made by phd's or sportsmen, not chefs :)

Here's an AP video with a real chef- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygnCsFm4TCU

3. Yeah. The freezing thing, though, I didn't know about.
I'd just whack off the fins, then filet the fish like any other fish. Looks tasty. Sadly, there are none of these in Minnesota. We have a shortage of coral reefs here. :rofl:

4. You have your own invasive species, though..
* Bighead carp Hypophthalmichthys nobilis
* Black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus
* Grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella
* Rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus
* Silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix
* Tilapia Oreochromis, Sarotherodon, and Tilapia spp.
* Zander Stizostedion lucioperca

Go get fishing! :)

5. We do indeed have our invasive species.
I don't catch them very often. But you missed one: the common European carp. I do catch them sometimes. My biggest was over 30 lb. I don't specifically fish for them, though.
