On Tuesday, city Planning Commission members OK'd what would be one of Alabama's first bicycle parking ordinances. The City Council still has to sign off on the idea before it becomes law, which could happen in August.
Recommended by the city's bike safety task force, the ordinance would require new businesses and apartment complexes with 20 or more parking spaces to provide at least two dedicated bicycle parking spaces with racks.
Malls and other places with huge parking lots could have to make room for up to 30 bicycles. Click here to read the full ordinance.
Existing businesses would be exempt. And the rule would not apply downtown, where there are no minimum parking requirements.
