Disney's China Hotels Slammed For Selling Shark-Fin Soup
HONG KONG — Conservationists slammed Disney on Monday for its plans to serve dishes such as shark's fin soup, sea cucumber and abalone in its hotel restaurants when it opens a new theme park in Hong Kong in September.

"Promoting these marine species is not responsible because they are not sustainably harvested. Disney should have the social responsibility to promote responsible consumption," said Clarus Chu of the World Wildlife Fund in Hong Kong.

"Serving these in wedding banquets will also make the bride and groom feel they are not doing something right." Conservationists have long condemned the eating of shark's fin because of overfishing and the brutal way in which it is harvested. Critics say many fisherman simply hack off the fins and throw the dying shark back into the sea.

But that has not stopped Chinese communities around the world from enjoying the dish, which is considered a sign of affluence."

Yes, better to fuck up all the oceans rather than deny wealthy people in China their God-given right to flaunt their putative "affluence". Maybe they could sell tiger-bone dick splints, too.

2. Eat more Fugu.
Shark fin soup does not have any taste so how do they know if they are getting the real thing? Spending money to show off is what a Disneyworld vacation is about also,TELL everyone that you had a great time even though everything was mediocre. The idea that money makes one happy leads rich people to play out that role even though they are experts in the knowledge that it does not. They eat bland soup and wait in line for hours at theme parks for rides lasting a few minutes. The coffee at Disneyworld is made from liquid concentrate and tastes awful, military governments establish coffee plantations so rich nations can gulp that crap. The symbolism of shark fin soup fits with weddings and Disneyworld-keep up the act that an expensive mistake will make you happy.
