AMEC Signs GBP300M Deal With EDF To Help Build UK Nuclear Reactors
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR) has signed an 11-year contract worth around GBP300 million with international engineering and project-management company AMEC PLC (AMEC.LN) to support the delivery of EDF's four new nuclear power reactors in the U.K., AMEC said Thursday.

The contract will run for 11 years with an option to extend for a further four. AMEC will work with EDF in France and the U.K. in project management, engineering and construction management.

...snip...

The U.K. government is pushing for a huge expansion of nuclear generation aiming to replace the country's aging fleet of nuclear power stations, boost energy security and reduce carbon emissions.

EDF is leading the nuclear revival and plans to have the first of four new nuclear power plants in the U.K. operational in 2017.

3. Um...the President of the United States is a supporter of nuclear energy.
Are you trying to claim that he should not be welcome to DU?

Glenn Seaborg was a Democrat.

Hans Bethe was a Democrat.

Alvin Weinberg was a Democrat.

We, of course, do have a mindless set in our party that is anti-nuke. They are, however, nothing more than our "creationist" wing, the set that has no respect for science.

4. I hope you spend more time in the E/E forum
The nuclear industry has a massive PR campaign,
we need more progressives fighting it.
They are making deals behind the scenes that are going to shock us the way credit derivatives did,
for example: "Nuclear Loan Guarantees Aren’t Just Guarantees: They are Actual Taxpayer Loans"
Aside from the problems with waste, proliferation, safety, etc, the economics suck, and they're not needed for fighting global warming, and will actually make it worse because the money could be better spent on alternatives which reduce emissions faster and cheaper.

2. More and more activity for this "dead industry".
There is something happening pretty much daily.

India began loading its newest reactor with dummy fuel for final set of tests/inspections before it goes critical this fall.

The reactor a VVER-1000 is first of twelve reactors under contract with Russia.
