Percent Talk: All Danish Renewables COMBINED Compared With Dangerous Natural Gas Consumption:
Edited on Sat Apr-24-10 04:19 AM by NNadir
http://www.ens.dk/en-US/Info/FactsAndFigures/Energy_statistics_and_indicators/Annual%20Statistics/Documents/BasicData2008.xls">All Danish Energy Consumption, By Fuel.

All so called "renewables" combined, wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, and the carcinogen releasing biomass burning: straw, wood chips, wood pellets, firewood, wood wastes, "renewable wastes" (garbage), biodiesel and biogas, 121,922 TJ.

(Note that the Danes include heat pumps as "renewable energy." Neils Bohr must be turning over in his grave.)

Dangerous natural gas, by contrast, with the wastes dumped indiscriminately in the atmosphere with much applause from dangerous uneducated anti-nukes: 377,641 TJ.

In the kind of magical "percent talk" that "renewables will save us" anti-nukes like to use when trying to mislead people about the obvious failure of so called "renewable energy" that means that Denmark consumes 310% as much dangerous natural gas as it produces from all of its so called "renewables" combined.

Denmark imports and burns http://www.ens.dk/en-US/Info/FactsAndFigures/Energy_statistics_and_indicators/Annual%20Statistics/Documents/Figures2008.xls">177,000TJ of coal.

Denmark also burns 340,000 TJ of oil.

Most dangerous fossil fuel burning fuels are mined in offshore oil platforms in Denmark, the kind of plant that blew up in Louisana this week, killing eleven people.

The Louisiana oil platform disaster produced ZERO hysterical disaster scenarios from dangerous dumb anti-nukes, because as is always the case, anti-nukes would rather spend their time contemplating nuclear accidents that they imagine rather than disasters which actually kill people.

Anti-nuke imagination is wholly based on anti-nuke ignorance of the technology developed by men like Seaborg, Fermi, Bethe and Weinberg.

Denmark, by the way, has the highest electricity price in Europe, not that this will stop dangerous fossil fuel apologists in the anti-nuke industry from claiming that Danish renewbles are economically sound.

1. We all know the short list of Unrecommend people here.
You are correct, you can kill people with coal and oil, even build schools with radio active bricks, that's OK. But don't say anything good about nuclear power.

2. Let's look at it another way

In 1996, Denmark burned 16.6 million short tons of coal. In 2008, it was down to 7.8 million short tons.
In 1996, Denmark burned 148 billion cubic feet of natural gas. This increased to a peak of 183 BCF in 2003/04 and then dropped to 162 BCF in 2008.
In 1996, Denmark consumed 31.8 Trillion KWH of electricity. In 2007 (the last year shown), 35.8 TKWH, a 4 TKWH increase.
In 1996, Denmark generated 1.2 Trillion Kilowatthours of electricity through wind. In 2007, 6.8 TKWH, a 5.6 TKWH increase.

All increase in Danish electrical requirements and more has been filled by wind so that nearly 1/6 of all electricity is now generated by wind.

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/cfapps/ipdbproject/iedindex3.cfm?tid=2&pid=37&aid=12&cid=&syid=2004&eyid=2008&unit=BKWH

I'm not sure what type of coal is burned in Danish plants, but using the dirtiest (Anthracite), in '96, Denmark produced 94.37 Billion Lbs of CO2 from coal and 17.85 Billion Lbs from Nat gas (112.22 Billion total). In 2008, they were producing to 44.34 Billion and 19.54 Billion respectively (down to 63.88 Billion Lbs total). All this while the population has added an extra 250,000 consumers.

4. are you sure Anthracite is the dirtiest?
IIRC it has the highest percentage of carbon and the lowest percentage of "other" materials. I think lignite or bituminous would be dirtier b/c it has a lower carbon content and more impurities.

6. Depends on your definitions
Edited on Sat Apr-24-10 04:22 PM by Dead_Parrot
As Alec says, anthracite is the "purest" coal so it produces lots of CO2 but not too much by way of other combustion products. Lignite doesn't produce so much CO2 but there's a load of SOx, NOx & N2O, HCl, HF, and various other shit that needs to be "managed".

edit: According to http://www.iea.org/stats/coaldata.asp?COUNTRY_CODE=DK most Danish coal is bituminous.

8. I was going for CO2 created by coal to generate electricity
From your link and another from the same organization showing Natural Gas, Denmark doesn't even use either commodity for Electricity. Both are only used in central heating plants.

7. Some of the same people who spew internal combustion engine exhaust without qualm...
... will go ape shit over minuscule amounts of tritium.

Now that's an embarrassment.

9. Do you use dangerous natural gas to heat your house? Yes? So what is your problem?
