Sun Chips' new bag - yea for Sun Chips!!

http://sunchips.com/healthier_planet.shtml?s=content_compostable_packaging

We dream of a world with less waste. That's why we've introduced a bag made from plants so it's fully compostable. Every 10 ½ oz. SunChips® package is designed to fully break down in just 14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost bin or pile. If it takes a little longer, don't worry about it. Mother nature will get to it soon enough.

Truth be told, our new bag sounds a bit different than our previous bags. That's because plant-based materials have different sound properties than the materials used to create our old bags. So although this version is a little bit louder, we hope you'll appreciate the change and the positive environmental impact it will have.

Much more info and video at link.

1. Good for them
now if they could just get Sun Chips to taste like something other than pieces of salted cardboard, I'd buy 'em!

5. I like the harvest cheddar flavor
I agree that the "original" flavor, or whatever it's called, does seem to taste rather like cardboard.

Haven't tried the other flavors, so I can't comment on them.

2. love sun ships.
for some reason, they sent me a test market bag in the early 90s before the chips came out with a survey asking what i thought of the chips. i thought that was kind of neat. liked the chips then; still like them a lot.

4. Too bad the landfills these bags will go into aren't hot, active compost piles
Rather, they are anaerobic and cold, which is why you can dig up decades-old newspapers and still read them despite paper being completely biodegradable.

6. people that buy Sunchips
are more likely to have a compost pile than people who buy Doritos... just sayin'. I've got a hot pile that i occasionally put compostable plates and "silver"ware and other new compostable products in. Some degrade much better than others. Fwiw, i find the corn starch based products take quite some time to break down well...

7. Maybe municipalties should collected compostables seperately.

Three bins
1) recyclable (blue bin)
2) compostable (green bin)
3) landfill (black bin)

Someday we will get there.
Imagine how much money waste management companies could make selling compost.

8. Been there, doin' that..
Here in Seattle we have two green bins, one for recycling and one for yard waste which includes compostable food waste. Plus the old black can for landfill waste. The trash and yard/kitchen bins are weekly and the recycling is a bi-weekly pickup.

10. Glad to hear that. Likely will be a while for VA though.
It took us a decade to get recycling bins. :(

11. Recently bought two bags of these.
Intend to compost/bury them to see how they do. Might cut one in half and stake to the ground, see if sun/exposure breaks it down. Inside is tinfoil reflective/shiny. Wonder how that's managed?

And I gotta say, these are the NOISIEST BAGS EVER. Cat's run whenever we open/crinkle them. It's, just, wow! If you're a ninja, these are not for you! :D
