Peru Protesters Block Roads in Canyon

LIMA, Peru - Roads in Peru's Colca Canyon were blocked Thursday by townspeople demanding a larger share of revenue from tourists who come to see condors soar over the desert-dry moonscape and white-water raft in one of the world's deepest valleys. <snip>

Mayors from the valley were in Lima Thursday to negotiate a settlement with President Alejandro Toledo's government. <snip>

They are demanding the regional government turn over to their municipalities the $7 fee to enter the canyon, which at 11,220 feet is one of the deepest in the world.

More than a thousand Colca residents protested Wednesday in the valley, which is about 62 miles northwest of Arequipa.
