Science Update: A Dangerous Disruption

There's more troubling news about bisphenol A:

The chemical compound is used in the production of some plastics--look for those with recycling symbol #7. In an interview with Science Update, AAAS's 60-second radio show, neuroendocrinologist Heather Patisaul of North Carolina State University says bisphenol A exposure disrupts reproductive development in both rats and humans.

"What happens with our rats is they go through puberty too early," Patisaul said, "and this mirrors what we’re seeing in girls in the U.S., where the age of puberty is getting lower."

Patisaul spoke at a http://aaas.confex.com/aaas/2010/webprogram/Paper1225.html">symposium Saturday at the AAAS Annual Meeting on the consequences of endocrine disupting agents.

In a separate symposium, researchers http://news.aaas.org/2010/0220synthetic-chemicals-and-breast-cancer.shtml">explored the link between bisphenol A and other synthetic chemicals with breast cancer.

1. Selling citizens poisons and toxic chemicals with the government's blessings.
Sounds like the free market at its best.

2. K&R
We're guinea pigs. Bisphenol-A makes big bucks for the chemical industry, and the FDA is corrupt.

- The odds are stacked against us......

3. this is used to line all cans, right?
i read an article saying all canned goods' cans are lined with it; acidic products, such as tomato, are especially unwise to eat, as this leeches it out more easily.

4. Well, sort of
The plastic used to line cans typically contains BPA. But yeah...

As for acidity, sure, that has an effect, but recent experiments using polycarbonate drinking bottles, and cold liquids found:

"We found that drinking cold liquids from polycarbonate bottles for just one week increased urinary BPA levels by more than two-thirds. ...
