Authorities find radioactive waste ship sunk by mafia
http://www.france24.com/en/20090917-authorities-uncover-radioactive-waste-ship-sunk-mafia-toxic-calabria-mediterranean-italy

This is a little old as it was dated 17 of September of '09 but it just goes to show that the nuclear power industry does not, I repeat, does not, have a safe nor sane plan for their waste.

Authorities find radioactive waste ship sunk by mafia
Italian authorities have found a wreck with over 120 barrels of radioactive waste around 28 kilometres from the coast of Calabria in southern Italy. As many as 32 ships carrying toxic waste have been sunk by the mafia in the Mediterranean.

AFP - Italian authorities have discovered a ship that was sunk by the mafia off the coast of southern Italy with 120 barrels of radioactive waste on board, a local prosecutor said Monday.

The 110-metre (360-feet) long ship was found on Saturday 500 metres (1,640 feet) under water and around 28 kilometres (17 miles) from the coast of Calabria, Paola city prosecutor Bruno Giordano told AFP.

"For the moment, we do not know the origin of the waste, but it is probably from abroad. It is a first lead," he said.

1. Today it is laughable to continue to plan using this technology. Phase it out.

2. Further down in the link this jumped out at me
The Cunsky is one of 32 vessels carrying toxic material that has been sunk by the mafia in the Mediterranean, according to the prosecutor's office in Reggio Calabria.

32 vessels, no wonder some European countries have no problem with using nuclear energy. They have a plan for the waste too. I hardly doubt that the aquatic life forms have the capacity to deal with this stuff but hey we won't be having to worry with it on the surface of this planet though will we. All responsible need to be dealt with with a firm hand

3. It "could be" radioactive medical waste
It could also be low-level radioactive trash that the nuclear power industry "paid" somebody to take away.

4. It could be highly radioactive waste also
Why would anyone go to the trouble to dispose of low level waste this way employing the mafia and dumping it at sea?
It could be coal fly ash or it could be a lot of things but my suspicions is its some nasty ass shit if the mafia is involved and their method of disposal is out at sea out of sight.

5. Gangsters rented warehouses in Cleveland and left barrels of toxic chemical waste behind ...
... when the lease ended. That was a news story about fifteen years ago.

"The problem with waste is that everybody wants you to pick it up, but nobody wants you to put it down".

7. $50 for a TV or a computer monitor at the county solid waste district facility
If you want an ethical disposal of that CRT, you have to pay. Otherwise, it could end up in a hole or shipped to a Chinese village where streams of metal-laden water run through the neighborhoods.

I had to talk the SWD into taking hundreds of fluorescent bulbs that my deceased brother was collecting because he thought they had value.

9. How did they even get a hold of it? Doesn't non-polferation prevent them from just handing it out?
Also, I wonder if the "probably from abroad" statement is deflection.
