cheap Mylar for sunny windows

At last! I found a place that sells rolls of semi-transparent Mylar sheeting to put over windows. WAY cheaper than pull down mylar shades or stick on film. Taping up sheets is not as nice, but in my apartment it's a good solution. I have 2 rooms with big south-facing windows and no shade - they overheat the apartment like crazy. I will be ordering this today...

South facing, hot windows. I would have never even thought of putting mylar on them - at any price - now to find it this cheap - Great!

3. Well, my family

was thinking about those screens that block the sun's rays becasue the front of my house bakes in the western sun in the afternoons. How do these mylar skins look on a house. I don't want something cheesy, but I don't want to spend so much money on sun blocking shades either?

I did a bunch of Googling yesterday on this topic. You can get professional installers to put a reflective film on the inside of the window (like car tinting) but it's expensive. Custom-sized pull down Mylar shades look to be about $120 for a 4' x 5' window like mine.

This guy has 2 types of the semi-transparent Mylar, and it's CHEAP. He recommends putting it up with thick double-sided tape. This won't look as nice from the outside, but it should be pretty effective for reflecting away the sun. I personally don't give a damn what my fellow apartment dwellers think so I'm going with the inexpensive roll :-) I've tucked a reflective car sunshade in a long & short window that faces east in our bedroom. In the summer without the shade our AC would come on at about 6AM to start cooling the room (it's got the digital temp. control). With the shade it stays off til about 8:30 or so. I think that by adding the Mylar to the big south facing window in that room it'll make an even bigger difference.
