Rate of deforestation in Amazon dropping
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 06:12 PM by JohnWxy
While if you check the average annual rate of deforestation for 2000-2009 is greater than the rate for 1990-1999

looking at each years data shows a strong down-ward trend in the last ten years.

(I tried the medium sized chart but it was too small. THe large one is kinda BIG).

annual figures, tabular summary.

Obviously, this doesn't mean the problem is solved. but it does show if the effort is made to reduce deforestation it can yield results. NOw, the next step is to try to bring the rate of deforestion to zero and incentivize reforestation!

2. I have to wonder, how much of that is due to efforts to reduce deforestation,
and how much is due to increased inaccessability of virgin forest.

It only makes sense that the closest and easiest would be first to go, and that logging rates would fall as it became more difficult and expensive to get to, and haul out, wood from the interior.

I'd hesitate to celebrate quite yet.

3. Does anyone know...
...of any organizations that help out poor farmers in areas near rainforest to BOTH help them out and curb deforestation?
