India wants climate change pact at Copenhagen

(AFP)

NEW DELHI — India insisted Friday it wanted to reach a global agreement on fighting climate change at the upcoming UN summit in Copenhagen but reiterated its opposition to binding carbon emission cuts.

"We are not defensive, we are not obstructionist. We want an international agreement in Copenhagen," Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh Ramesh told reporters in New Delhi.

But India "simply is not in a position to take on legally binding emissions reductions targets," he said, while pressing rich nations to provide technical and monetary aid to help developing countries fight global warming.

Ramesh's statement came ahead of the December conference in Copenhagen, which is meant to seal a new international accord on fighting climate change after the Kyoto Protocol's requirements expire in 2012.

1. Of course, limits on everyone but them keeps them on top and polluting, like Kyoto has done for them
Whoever exempted India and China from Kyoto should be shot. That stupidity rendered it meaningless and made the movement look foolish and not serious. Hurt the signatories and helped India and China get ahead of everyone else.

2. And the US simply didn't sign, even though, at the time, we were clearly "on top."
Just face it; the typical "American" is much more responsible for this SNAFU than is the average Indian or Chinese.

So long as we hold the arrogant stance that the "developing" nations need to shoulder the burden first, they will not. As the worst offenders, it's up to us to make the first and largest steps.

3. Perhaps you didn't read the article.
The point being made (and I agree) is that *cuts* aren't an issue with India and China; the path we need to encourage them to follow is one of sustainable energy development where their future growth in energy is met by tapping renewable sources.
