The dangerous biofuel ethanol cannot be transported by pipeline because like most elements of the so called "renewables" industry, it is too diffuse. (It is also corrosive to pipelines, but that's another story.)
It's another victory for the car CULTure I guess.
ROCKFORD, Ill. – Railroad tank cars holding thousands of gallons of highly flammable ethanol derailed and exploded in flames, killing a 41-year-old woman as she tried to run to safety from a car stopped at a crossing.
Three other people from the same car escaped with severe burns. Hundreds of people were evacuated from homes near the explosion.
Eighteen tank cars, all filled with ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, derailed Friday on the edge of Rockford, about 80 miles northwest of Chicago.
The wreckage burned through the night, but the fire was dying down Saturday afternoon as federal investigators began collecting evidence...
...Officials evacuated about 600 homes in the area on the edge of Rockford, about 80 miles northwest of Chicago, Friday night amid concerns about air pollution.
Some people were allowed to return to their homes Saturday, but authorities were not letting anyone within a quarter-mile of the derailment site, said Cherry Valley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Allen Geeser.
Larry Bruce, who lives near the scene, evacuated with his family, and they spent Friday night in their RV parked at a Wal-Mart. The 41-year-old father said he had no choice but to leave because his twin 21-year-old daughters have respiratory problems.
"We have very little room for error and no room for mistakes," he said, adding that officials have not told him when the air quality will improve.
Air quality problems? I thought ethanol was, um, "clean."
Ironically, the dead woman was in the car herself, stopped at a railroad crossing.
We'll see if the same dogmatic anti-science fundies who are always carrying on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about Three Mile Island will be here 30 years from now having a fetish about the "anniversary" accident.
I suspect they. couldn't. care. less. about this death.
