A bill that would allow municipalities to buy and sell carbon credits for converting landfill waste to charcoal died on the Senate floor Monday.
SB223, sponsored by Sen. Ross Romero, D-Salt Lake City, went down in a 9-17 vote due to conservative fears over cap and trade.
"I view this -- carbon credits -- as one of the most substantial threats to our economy," said Sen. Scott Jenkins, R-Plain City. "I'm afraid of it, frankly."
Global warming has not been proved, Jenkins argued, disputing the notion that climate change is human-caused.
