Jobs hope for offshore power station

Feb 23 2009 by Adrian Pearson, The Journal

EUROPEAN spending chiefs are preparing to hand over 150m to help fund an offshore renewable energy “power station”.

The Journal can reveal the Commission is likely to get the go-ahead for plans to fund a North Sea energy grid which will let energy companies link up thousands of turbines and provide one power source for homes from Ireland to Germany.

Last night it was predicted the North East would benefit with up to 25,000 jobs and millions of pounds in investment as the region continues to push ahead on renewable energy.

The wind power cash was proposed by the European Commission, which is eager to see businesses start spending the money this year and into 2010 as the EC continues to bring forward projects designed to lessen the impact of the recession. Energy experts predicted the North Sea grid would open the way for a wind revolution in the UK.
