Western Mass. utility first to tap solar power law

By Greg Turner | Thursday, February 12, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Business & Markets

A Bay State utility has finally taken advantage of a landmark green energy law that lifted a prohibition on owning solar energy sites.

Western Massachusetts Electric Co. today announced it filed plans with the state Department of Public Utilities for solar-power projects in its coverage area. A decision will be made within six months.

The Springfield-based company is the first to make use of new solar energy regulations outlined in the Green Communities Act, a law signed in July with much fanfare by Gov. Deval Patrick.

“It’s the first one,” confirmed Lisa Capone, spokeswoman for the state Department of Energy Resources. “We’re pleased they’ve stepped up to the plate with this proposal.”
