Even if money is tight, city leaders say spending money on solar is worthwhile

By Jim Becker

While converting seven public buildings to solar power may seem frivolous in an era of budget cuts, Tucson city leaders point out the investment will save more money than it will cost.

First, with utility costs expected to go up, converted buildings would be producing free electricity.

Perhaps as important, incentives from Tucson Electric Power will pay for nearly half of the costs of the $7.6-million investment.

That means taxpayers would make an average payment of $98-thousand a year for twelve years, less than one-fourth of the cost.
