Associated Press, 12.22.08, 10:06 AM EST
The Sierra Club says it is opposing South Carolina Electric & Gas' federal application to build two nuclear generators in Fairfield County.
South Carolina Sierra Club chairwoman Susan Corbett said in a news release Monday it's the first time the organization has led an intervention in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's multiyear licensing process.
Scana Corp.-owned SCE&G is seeking permission to build the $10 billion reactors at the site where it operates a nuclear plant near Jenkinsville. South Carolina's utility-watchdog agency has recommended state regulators approve the company's plan.
Opponents say the plant's costs are uncertain and the final reactor design has not been approved. The company says it needs the reactors to meet growing demand for electricity.
Merry Christmas to the environmental watchdogs at the Sierra Club!
