EOR could bring more oil into state

By James Myers
Boomerang Staff Writer

Wyoming could be seeing more oil and consequently more money in its future as a result of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). The University of Wyoming was wrangled by the governor’s office to look into ways to recover oil that’s left in previously drilled wells.

Conventional drilling is unable to get all of the oil in oil wells, but using EOR, the remaining oil can be harvested. The process would also clean up many of Wyoming’s abandoned oil fields leaving them more pristine.

The Wyoming Geological Survey estimates that five to 15 percent of Wyoming’s oil is still in its reservoirs — roughly 1.2 billion barrels of oil. While the figures are just estimates, if they are close, it could bring in as much as $2 billion to the state over a 20-year period if the current price of oil holds.
