Coal-to-Liquids — West Virginia ready to become a global leader
An $800 million investment by mining giant CONSOL could position the Mountain State as a global leader in modern coal technology. CONSOL announced this week that it plans to build a coal gasification plant capable of producing 720,000 metric tons of methanol that can be used as feedstock for the chemical industry. Officials also expect the project will be capable of converting methanol to about 100 million gallons per year of 87 octane gasoline.

3. This is very amusing...
If I had the capital I would heavily invest in coal. The price is about to take off.

Why? what do you think powers our power plants? There will be less coal to go around if they are wanting to turn that coal into liquid.

This is on the same par as ethanol. They turned food into fuel and people went hungry.

They are now going to turn coal into gas so now people will get cold in the winter and broil in the summer.

Folks, here's the straight talk (LOL) coal to liquid is bullshit with a happy face on it.

Its like the lie of "clean" coal.

If you need an example of what will happen to our atmosphere, look to china. They are currently adopting the coal to liquid tech and it's literally killing them.

4. Methanol infrastructure is something I support, but man oh man oh man...
...we're going to back into this disaster.

I'm sure the whole time too, we'll hear all about "solar breakthroughs" for methanol synthesis.

It's going to get very ugly. People can run their stupid cars on methanol, and man, one hesitates what that's going to mean for ground water, rivers and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Methanol however is a good intermediate for DME synthesis, although DME can be made directly from syngas now and we don't need no stinking MeOH intermediate.
