May 30, 2008 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) --
The French Nuclear Safety Authority has ordered energy major EDF to temporarily suspend construction work at its 1,600MW Flamanville European pressurized reactor in northern France, after discovering irregularities in quality controls, according to the Financial Times.
The Nuclear Safety Authority (NSA) has stated that it discovered anomalies in the reinforcement of concrete used to build the reactor. The nuclear safety watchdog has instructed EDF to prepare an action plan to address the quality issues and tackle the continuing laxity in its surveillance of works and suppliers.
French construction major Bouygues, which is responsible for the reinforcement of the concrete, is one of the contractors and suppliers expected to be held accountable in the action plan.
The suspension of woks reportedly comes at a time when EDF is seeking approval from the UK government over its takeover bid for the UK's sole nuclear power generator British Energy.
