Energy fears looming, new survivalists prepare
Energy fears looming, new survivalists prepare

Associated Press Writer

Peter Laskowski plants vegetables at his remote home in Waitsfield, Vt., Friday, April 11, 2008. Convinced that the planet's oil supply is dwindling and the world's economies are heading for a crash, people around the country are moving onto homesteads, learning to live off their land, conserving fuel and, in some cases, stocking up on guns they expect to use to defend themselves and their supplies from desperate crowds of people who didn't prepare.

BUSKIRK, N.Y. — A few years ago, Kathleen Breault was just another suburban grandma, driving countless hours every week, stopping for lunch at McDonald's, buying clothes at the mall, watching TV in the evenings.

That was before Breault heard an author talk about the bleak future of the world's oil supply. Now, she's preparing for the world as we know it to disappear.

Breault cut her driving time in half. She switched to a diet of locally grown foods near her upstate New York home and lost 70 pounds. She sliced up her credit cards, banished her television and swore off plane travel. She began relying on a wood-burning stove.

"I was panic-stricken," the 50-year-old recalled, her voice shaking. "Devastated. Depressed. Afraid. Vulnerable. Weak. Alone. Just terrible."

Convinced the planet's oil supply is dwindling and the world's economies are heading for a crash, some people around the country are moving onto homesteads, learning to live off their land, conserving fuel and, in some cases, stocking up on guns they expect to use to defend themselves and their supplies from desperate crowds of people who didn't prepare.

The exact number of people taking such steps is impossible to determine, but anecdotal evidence suggests that the movement has been gaining momentum in the last few years.

These energy survivalists are not leading some sort of green revolution meant to save the planet. Many of them believe it is too late for that, seeing signs in soaring fuel and food prices and a faltering U.S. economy, and are largely focused on saving themselves...cont'd

5. While I certainly see a place for emergency survival discussions,
my commitment is to a complete change in our relationship with this Earth and the way we live in the long term. Emergency measures deal with the short term survival of an event. A little overlap, but really two different things.

6. Agreed.
I'll be retiring to the rainforest in Costa Rica in 8 years...a completely off-the-grid, small footprint existence.

2. How many more times must this article be posted?

And with all the factors in real life, as the government owns the land and they still have to pay taxes, how much longer will they truly have?

Best of luck to them.

3. Get yourself a solar oven and an efficient little grill. It'll be a good start.

7. Comment on the picture of the guy storing wood underneath his house porch -
That just looks like a baaaaad idea. Seems like it would invite termites and all kinds of varmints to infest the house, not to mention it's potential as a fire hazard. One has to be very careful bringing wood into the house as it's always possible to bring termites in with it.

9. Deja vu all over again ...........
I went through this same thing in the late 70's. Running out of oil, economic collapse, disaster and riots in the cities, escape to rural communes and country living. I was a bona fide survivalist.

Been there, done that, didn't collapse .......
