Bush is destroying the West - one day at a time and he still has more than 6 mos to go!!!
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 05:08 PM by Bobbieo
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under direction from the Bush Administration is racing to approve planning documents that would allow big oil companies to commercially develop more than 2 million acres of oil shale and tar sands in the west.

Areas at risk include the Roan Plateau in Colorado and the San Rafael Swell in Utah. The technology used to develop oil shale and tar sands is unproven and of questionable economic value, but based on the evidence from Canada, causes extreme environmental damage.

Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is working with other organizations to prevent these disastrous plans from being adopted.

1. Fight that one to the last breath.
It's of dubious value, and is damaging as hell.

4. Here's a petition from the Wildeness Society
Protect the West from hasty oil shale development

From the Wilderness Society at http://action.wilderness.org/campaign/oilshale

The BLM is busy greasing the skids so big oil companies can commercially develop more than two million acres of oil shale and tar sands in the West, no matter that the technology is unproven and may not be commercially viable for decades.

At risk: places like the spectacular Roan Plateau in Colorado and the San Rafael Swell in southeastern Utah, renowned for its spiraling sandstone cliffs and rugged solitude.
