Falls hits 40 below, breaks record
February 12, 2008 - 11:58am — Journal Staff
Filed under: Weather

Another morning of arctic cold settled across northeastern Minnesota on Monday.
The National Weather Service said temperatures overnight dropped into the 25-to-35 below zero range across the northeast.
International Falls lived up to its claim of being the ‘‘Icebox of the Nation.’’ The town on the Canadian border had a low of 40 below zero, breaking the previous record of 37 below set in 1967 and equaled in 1981, said Mike Stewart, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Duluth.
The cold was expected, Stewart said. ‘‘When the winds finally died off and the skies cleared off, it just dropped,’’ he said.
Stewart expected Monday to be the coldest day this week in International Falls. Temperatures are expected to rise to 7 to 12 degrees Tuesday and 12 to 17 degrees Wednesday.
Nick McDougall, a worker at The Fisherman, a convenience store and gas station on the edge of International Falls, said it was so cold the trunk of his car wouldn’t close. He found that out after pulling out the battery charger because the car wouldn’t start.
McDougall, 48, said he was not prepared for the cold even though he’s lived in International Falls all his life. ‘‘This is about as cold as it gets, this is bad,’’ he said. ‘‘There’s no wind — it’s just cold.’’

It's supposed to hit 78 today in Phoenix, another reason I left that God forsaken state.

1. Moose and Squirrel
I had a friend who was from Eastern Europe. She had a lovely accent, but was puzzled because people would come up to her and ask her to say "Moose and Squirrel". Sounded just like Natasha. I think someone finally had her watch Bullwinkle so she could understand why she was asked to repeat that phrase so often.

Here in New Hampshire, our "conservation" license plates
feature a Moose. Some wisenheimer got those plates (with
the big picture of the moose on them) and as their vanity
license plate number on that tag got:

NSQUIRL

I laugh every time I see it!

5. Hey, eff you!
This "God forsaken state" is a wonderful place to live. We routinely top the list of highest voter turnout, best quality of living, you name it.

The cold just keeps the assholes away.
