Rep. Don Young (R-AK) Wants To "Take Advantage" Of Melting Arctic Ice To Build New Ports

NCHORAGE, Alaska -- Congressman Don Young wants Alaska to take advantage of melting sea ice by building more ports up north and around the state. Young spoke at a polar conference sponsored by the Army Corps of Engineers Friday afternoon at the Hotel Captain Cook.

He said climate change means more ships will be traveling in the Arctic.

The congressman called on the state and coastal communities to work together on building and expanding ports.

"I'm looking at the possibility because of the Asian traffic," Young said. "If we can get a rail, which will move the rail through Canada, we would be able to bring a product in by ship -- into even Anchorage -- load it on a rail and take it to the Midwest much faster than you could go in the Lower 48."
