BNSF building hydrogen-powered fuel cell locomotive

What may be the world's first hydrogen-powered fuel cell locomotive is being built in Topeka, promising a reduction in use of imported oil and emission carbon dioxide that pollutes the atmosphere.

And hydrogen-powered fuel cell locomotives would be much quieter than diesel locomotives.

The skeleton of the new machine was on display Wednesday in the BNSF Railway Co. shops in Topeka. Developers hope to have the first machine ready for service in June.

Sen. Sam Brownback attended the event to announce the Department of Defense is providing a second year of funding for the experiment — $2.4 million for this federal fiscal year following $2 million in the previous fiscal year.
