Kansas City area helps to nourish green development in tornado town

City council members in Greensburg, Kan., have made a significant commitment to rebuilding the tornado-ravaged town as a model green community.

In December, the council adopted a resolution that all city buildings greater than 4,000 square feet will be required to reduce energy use by 42 percent over current building code requirements.

New construction will feature passive solar energy, recycled building material and other environmentally friendly features that leaders hope will not only rebuild a town, but also give it new life.

“This is just another important step in our recovery and our intentions to come back as one of the greenest towns in America,” Mayor John Janssen said.

1. Soon to become the very-suitably named and beautifully rebuilt
town of GREENSburg. I like that. Maybe it can become a sort of Mecca for people to study green building techniques and their practical applications, on a community-wide scale.
