Deniers fall for hoax; spread fake paper as gospel
Edited on Thu Nov-08-07 09:53 AM by Viking12
It made the circles on a denier list serve run by Benny Pesier. Inhofe's PR hack Marc Morano posted it on the Sentate EPW site then pulled it. Others have been busted as suckers.

From DeSmogBlog:

Hat's off (we think) to UK writer and consultant David Thorpe, the apparent creator for the impressive web-based spoof - a definitive bit of climate change denial as reported in The Journal of Geoclimatic Studies.

Although the "journal" lists two volumes and some very tempting content*, the only research paper on the website is titled: "Carbon dioxide production by benthic bacteria: the death of manmade global warming theory?" The paper reports that rising volumes of CO2 are actually caused "by saprotrophic eubacteria living in the sediments of the continental shelves fringing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans."

Unfortunately, this wonderful news is attributed to a group of scientists who can't be found, working at a series of institutions or departments that don't exist.

On edit: here's a link to the hoax paper:

2. Brilliant
I am reminded of the "research paper" denouncing the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide.

3. Pretty easy to debunk as a hoax

Doing a quick Google of references in the paper show that none of the authors cited have any other links associated with them than this paper. Oopsie.

4. My favourite part is this reference:
Tibbold, WR and JD Rawsthorne (1998). Miocene, Pliocene and Plasticine fossil records for eukaryotic mass on the West African continental shelf.

That along with the lockstep graphs and all the funky symbol-filled equations make it a real scientific sidesplitter.

6. A little help
Like anyone else on here I am sick of people like those in this administration screwing this nation over and the entire world as well.

Lately I've been trying to refute some nutjob on the net who seems to think that he's proven without a doubt that CO2 causes no effect on the Earth's temperature whatsoever, and that the earth's atmosphere is too big for us to really do anything.

Could someone help me find some of the various errors in his ongoing rants? He claims that he'll change his mind if he's proven wrong, and I would like to give that a try. Just sick of people like this guy (his profile says he's sixteen) spreading false information. :X
