Green acres

Press staff Friday, 02 November 2007

A San Francisco company says it has rounded up enough investors to build an eight-acre solor power plant outside Tracy.

A San Francisco company that plans to build a Tracy-area solar power plant announced this week that it has gained $10 million in venture capital from other companies that promote and develop solar power.

GreenVolts, creator of the trademarked CarouSol solar panel device, plans an eight-acre, two-megawatt, solar power facility in the area. The company announced the project in June, and said the new solar power plant would provide electricity for PG&E.

The company has not disclosed where the project would be built or how much it would cost. Company CEO Bob Cart said the $10 million is not earmarked for any specific project.

Company spokesman Mike Azzano said GreenVolts plans to deliver electricity to PG&E in late 2008 and the Tracy project, named GV1, is on schedule.

The $10 million comes from Greenlight Energy Resources Inc. of Charlottesville, Va., Avista Corp. of Spokane, Wash., and other investors.

Avista and GreenVolts teamed up earlier this year to build a test project for GreenVolts’ concentrated photovoltaic system. The solar array is designed to automatically track the sunlight, turn solar panels so that they collect the most heat and focus that heat onto solar cells.
