Art colony considers tent city

By: JOHN HUNNEMAN - Staff Writer

TEMECULA -- Oh, the yurts are on the way. They might be here tomorrow, they might be here today. They could be white, or they may be blue. There's a yurt for me and a yurt for you.

In his lifetime, if Theodor Geisel had stayed at the Dorland Mountain Arts Colony to work on his Dr. Seuss children's books, perhaps yurts might have come sooner to the hilltop.

Now, if organizers of the effort to rebuild the retreat -- destroyed by fire in 2004 -- have their way, yurts will soon replace, at least temporarily, the colony's rustic cabins used as getaways by hundreds of artists for more than a quarter century.

The modern yurt -- a round, semipermanent tent -- is an adaptation of a structure used since ancient times by the nomads of Central Asia.
